cecm-petition-no-sign

The signers of this petition call on the Special Administrative Board (SAB) of the St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) to immediately rescind the deed restrictions on closed public school buildings which prohibit buyers of the buildings from reopening them as schools. These buildings were built with taxpayer funds for the purpose of educating our children. This policy defeats that purpose and harms our communities and our city by limiting educational opportunities for our children.

This deed restriction hurts everyone. There is nothing that insures that everything that is harmful in the world will continue than to block opportunities for excellent education. To refuse to allow new schools to purchase buildings that used to be available for schooling is insanity. What are you doing to your community, your future? What can you be thinking?

It is ludicrous that a School Board with such dire education issues passed legislation restricting closed school buildings from being used as schools.

I only heard of this issue 2 weeks ago, and am FURIOUS that taxpayer owned property and the communities they are in have been abused so thoughtlessly by the SAB. I truly cannot believe it was legal for such a deed restriction to be imposed without input from citizens.

My daughter is now attending a St. Louis Public School and the class room is overcrowded with students. I recall a few years back that several city school were closed and students had to be bused to other schools, which doubled the sizes of the classrooms. If the schools would sell these properties it would allow for them to reopen and give our children the opportunity to have a better learning experience and more one on one with the teachers because the classrooms will not be overcrowded.

These school buildings do not belong to the school district, they belong to the people. As such the people may determine that an abandoned school building may be used in a similarly suitable manner, including but not limited to not-for-profit private and charter schools or any other not-for-profit agency.

Schools are an integral part of our society and communities. The use of the deed restrictions benefits no one. Please reconsider your position for the good of the community and the education of those surrounding theses abandoned facilities.

Why let publicly funded buildings go to waste, especially when the children still need an education.

How could you possibly oppose more schools?
