How the U.S. Stacks Up Series: Math

Published:  February 1, 2011

CECM is constantly monitoring progress and legislation in other states to use as benchmarks and examples for Missouri. But, as the world continues to become more and more connected, it is increasingly important to apply the same indicators to the global picture. We created this data series to provide readers a look into how our country’s education compares to the rest of the world’s, using interactive data charts.
Just a warning, the data may shock you.

25 Countries Outperform U.S. in Mathematics

Top Preforming Students in PISA Mathematics 2006

Scrolling over the bars in the chart, you can see all the countries that outperform U.S. students in math. Countries like Belgium, Iceland and the Slovak Republic are doing a better job of educating their children to preform on this extremely important subject. In fact, Korea, the highest preforming country, scored 3.55 times better then the U.S. That is a staggering 19.44 point gap.

What could this mean for the U.S.? This data certainly implies that, on average, a child coming from these other 25 countries are better equipped with the knowledge to preform in math-heavy careers. And from engineering to finance to pharasuticals, at least some math skills are essential in almost every career path.

It is so important to study this data to show that we, as a country, must do better when it comes to educating our children and, consequently, protecting our global future.

Click around on the chart and be sure to check back next as we revel more shocking global data.
